Helpful Hints for a Balanced Diet

Some useful food tips, whether you are on Annual Camp or Weekend Exercise...or even just for getting yourself fit for when applying for HM Forces.

  • Go to (or ensure that you eat) meals (even if you're tired or you don't feel very hungry).
  • Think about how much training you have done that day, and how much you are going to have to do the next day. This will help you decide how much you need to eat.
  • Decide what you are going to eat before you go.
  • Remember to put carbohydrates (e.g. potatoes, rice or pasta) on your plate first at mealtimes, then your vegetables. Meat, fish or poultry should go on last.
  • Aim to have 5 portions of fruit and vegetables per day.
  • Reduce the amount of fatty and sugary foods you have - have them occasionally as treats.
  • If you are buying foods from the NAAFI, read the food label to help you choose a 'healthy' option.
  • When you are in the field, eat all the food in your ration pack. This will help give you a balanced diet.

Whats in my Ration Pack?

Ration Packs ('Rat Packs') are military food packs that come in a small cardboard box. They come in a variety of menus, and easily provide enough food for one person for a 24 hour period. An example of one is below.

French Onion Soup Hot Chocolate Savoury Biscuits (Biscuits Brown) Milk Chocolate Tissues Cooked Rice Boiled Sweets Fruit Biscuits Chewing Gum Chicken Pate Orange Drink Powder Curried Lamb Fruit Dumplings in Custard Bacon and Beans Condiments (tea, coffee, sugar, water purification tablets etc) Hot Pepper Sauce
